French Country Cottage

Mullett Lake North East Michigan

This family lakehouse, with guest house quarters, hugs the shores of Mullett Lake in North East Michigan. The family has for three generations enjoyed and cherished this property.

Ciao Bella! approached this project with an eye to the sentimental and the need for well tuned family gatherings. We divided the main living space into five unique and functional areas…each to compliment different activities.  The family is able to rest, read and relax by the fire, enjoy audio and video in another area,  or have a game of cards or work puzzles with a view of the lake. Dining and kitchen are at the other end but remain an integral part of the whole.

The inviting rooms are a light and airy breath of spring. All bedroom are upstairsEach is a large space, with soft color, warm cherry woods and English lace window treatments.

For TV viewing, we offered many comfortable seats and selected a large Buffalo Check fabric in soft blue, white and yellow for the two lounge chairs that helped to define this activity area; this is complimented  by Scalamandre’s French blue fabric on the traditional sofa that divides the viewing space from this cozy fireplace setting .

Handcrafted needlepoint rugs from Portugal were custom designed for causal dining; a 40 foot companion runner was carried up the stairs to the landings ton the second floor. Ancient Jerusalem miniature tiles hand cut for the backsplash add texture to the porcelain white kitchen.

The romantic English gardens, pathways and water features are breath taking. The owners love to garden and their talent brings classic design to the historic order and chaos found in English gardens that so well emphasizes the warmth of this lovely cottage.
